Fresh Water Fishing - Taupo , Taupo District
Remote Wilderness Heli-Fishing in New Zealand

Is your idea of paradise likened to the untouched wilderness of the movie “Jurassic Park”? Then you are getting close to the unfathomable landscape that you will experience while fly fishing the many remote rivers surrounding Lake Taupo.

Only by helicopter can you access the pristine waters of the great Wanganui, the Mohaka, Rangitkei and Ripia Rivers - all of which have unique qualities of their own.

These rivers offer a challenge to even the most experienced angler, and the rewards are well worth the trip.  Warmer summer months provide the perfect setting for both brown and rainbow trout that are willing to surface for a well presented dry fly.  Nymphing can also be used when conditions don’t favour a dry.

All fishing equipment, licence and lunch are provided.  A reasonable level of fitness is required on these remote rivers.

Allow a full 8 hours for this trip

Specialists in Wilderness Fishing & Trophy Trout
From October through April there are some outstanding fly fishing opportunities for both browns and rainbows. Sight fishing for trout in crystal clear water is what it’s all about. The trout are resident fish, both browns and rainbows ranging in weight from 4lbs to 6lbs, and in remote mountain streams - the double figured (10lbs).

Great dry fly action can be had December through to March with the Cicada hatch producing some wonderful fishing.

Wilderness Adventures
Wilderness Fishing by Helicopter, Raft or 4x4 Access
The 'Overnighter'
The ultimate flyfishtaupo.com trip is an ‘overnighter’ either by Heli-fishing or Rafting. Trips depart from Taupo, taking you to a selected wilderness river located in some of the most remote areas around the central North Island of New Zealand.

If you choose the helicopter option it will transport all the necessary equipment to the camp site returning to transfer you to the starting point where day one of your adventure begins. Start by fishing the crystal clear water where the fish can easily be spotted and will rise to a dry fly.

By late afternoon you will have arrived at the camp site where a hearty meal will be enjoyed along with a chance to exchange stories about the days events. Then comes the best part, as these rivers are known to produce some of the most exhilarating fishing you will ever experience with the “evening rise”. This can last until the sun has set and is the perfect way to finish day one.

Day two begins with a cooked breakfast beside the river, followed by the second part of the expedition journeying up the river for another full days fishing.

Multi Day Trips
A flyfishtaupo.com specialty is the five day, four night trip which allows for some serious fishing. These trips are planned meticulously and in close consultation with our clients to insure that the maximum time is spent fishing. It is possible to fish more than one river on these trips so you can experience different river systems.

All the equipment and food is provided and our company policy is that we carry emergency supplies including satellite telephone and safety equipment.

This trip can also be combined with rafting or access over private land to some amazing spots for both brown and rainbow trout.

We have the option of driving to remote rivers by 4x4 vehicle which opens up another option should you choose not to fly. This option has a minimum of two full days with one night under canvas or hut.

Safety and enjoyment are paramount, so all fishing locations are well researched and customised to suit your needs and ability.  Our guides are fully qualified in first aid and when required, carry a satellite phone along with a personal mini sat-alert (EPIRB) when fishing in remote wilderness.

Luxury Wilderness Camping
During the summer, multi-day tours into wilderness areas in the central North Island of New Zealand are simply brilliant for the experienced angler. Travelling by helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft, the client can further extend their fishing experience to remote areas and also the South Island. The angler can look forward to stalking wild rainbows and browns that have real attitude and will fight all the way!

Old Farts & Old Tarts Tours
Firstly, let’s explain what the terminology of what an ‘Old Fart’ or ‘Old Tart’ means... The term must be viewed as an expression of endearment rather than anything insulting. In New Zealand an ‘Old Fart or Tart’ is an affectionate term for those who are in their senior years. It also means - a great person who still lives life to the full and isn’t ready to have the coffin lid nailed shut just yet!
It all started by a chance meeting with a gentleman in his senior years, fishing one of Taupo’s local rivers. A conversation began and he mentioned that he had always wanted to fish a remote river, but the cost and the lack of a fishing buddy had prevented him from following his dream. He mentioned that if he could find “an old fart”, he would like to give it a go! The first ‘Old Farts Tour’ was born!

“Brent carries a satellite phone and an emergency locator beacon and he is very safety conscious. Help is literally minutes away, despite the remoteness. Essential when you consider the age and the affluence of many of his clients”.

David Treseder. Wellington, New Zealand (Junior Old Fart) January 2008.

After some thought, we decided it is not only men who wish to discover fly fishing in the wilderness. Women feel exactly the same way, hence the addition of the “Old Tarts Tour”.  I have guided a number of ladies on camping trips and provide some additional amenities to make camping more comfortable and enjoyable.

Flyfishtaupo.com will endeavour to match you up with a suitable fishing companion and arrange your wilderness adventure or, if you have a friend who has a similar outgoing nature – they can join us.  We carefully select the river to suit your fitness and fishing ability and we can promise you one thing - it’s a great two or three days!

Here’s what to do

Fly Fishing Clinics - For Women, Individuals and Groups
Let’s be honest, women have a slightly different way of thinking about the great outdoors and what it has to offer. Here at flyfishtaupo.com we have come up with a specially designed fishing clinic for women who want to explore their adventurous streak while feeling safe and comfortable.

After many years of guiding and teaching anglers the subtle art of fly fishing, I have found that women quickly master the techniques fishing a river all on their own; it’s just the wading that tends to make them a little nervous.

Flyfishtaupo.com offer packages for individuals and groups. The small class size of four people gives us the chance to work closely with each participant and allows for individual attention from our guides.

Fishing schools are designed specifically for women allowing for a relaxed environment but most importantly, a fun fishing experience.  Each clinic is tailored and planned and with the importance of being in an environment focused on improving your abilities with others.

Whether you are an absolute beginner wanting to give it a go, or you are already experienced but wanting to continue to gain knowledge, the fishing clinics provide the perfect opportunity to mix with like-minded people who share a love of the outdoors.

You’ll learn about the anatomy of a river, where to look for fish, best techniques to use for a particular type of river, hooking, playing and landing the fish. We will also teach you how to tie your own flys on, construct a leader, and as mentioned, how to wade safely.

The trips are meticulously planned and we provide everything from camp gear, fishing tackle, food and two or three full days of guiding but is a summer activity running from October to April.

Highlights of the course include:

  • Instructions in casting, reading the water, knot tying, equipment selection, wading and safety on the water.
  • You will have plenty of on-stream time with your instructors as well as time to fish on your own.
  • The two day school allows participants to spend the evenings talking about the day’s fishing, along with possibly making new friends to go fishing with.
  • Flyfishtaupo.com provides everything you need and we will be supply a detailed checklist of what needed in relation to personal items prior to departure.

Other options can include:
Two or three day luxury camping trips to some of the most remote parts of the North Island where the fishing is simply spectacular and scenery that defies words.

Your Guide – Brent Pirie
I have been fly fishing and guiding both professionally and for fun - and my passion hasn’t waned since hooking my first trout. In fact, many of my clients see my hand shake when they hook into a trout be it their 1st or their 100th.

Teaching fly fishing has been a natural progression to my passion as it gives me the opportunity to show others how it’s done and share in the pleasure I get from walking the river banks hunting for that elusive trout.

Your time spent with us means it will be instructional and extremely informative.  We are patient and love fishing but most importantly we enjoy sharing our knowledge about the Taupo Rivers and trout with you.

Most importantly fishing has to be fun so we will ensure that you have plenty of that along with lasting friendships and memories.

Equipment
If you are just starting out and want to see whether fly fishing is for you then you need not purchase anything. Flyfishtaupo.com clinics provide everything, all the waders, Sage rods, tackle and any other equipment you need and is all covered in the cost of your trip. If you do have your own fishing equipment, then please bring it along as it’s easier to practice when you get back home.

Accommodation
Here at flyfishtaupo.com we have negotiated an extremely good room rate at a local hotel. You can choose to have a single or twin share room and prices will reflect your option.

The rooms are clean and comfortable and you are close to town should you wish to walk and explore the vibrant city if Taupo.  We expect that you will either stay the first night before your clinic commences and return home on the Sunday afternoon, however this can be changed upon booking your clinic and any changes may affect the price.

If you are arriving by air we will arrange to have you collected at the airport and returned at the end of the clinic to meet your flight at no charge.

Meals
Breakfast, morning and afternoon teas and lunch are all provided for you during the clinic.  We have arranged to dine at one of Taupo’s local restaurants with a two course meal included in the price of the clinic. Some wine is included but if you need further re-hydration then this is on you.

You will be picked up and returned to your accommodation at the end of the evening to if we do choose to dine out in town.

Clinic Cost
Prices are available upon request.

We have one very simple rule, the cost of the clinic is all inclusive and everything from the equipment needed, your fishing license, morning and afternoon teas and lunch for both days are included. The only additional cost will be when you finish your days fishing you might want to share a bottle of wine at one of the fine dinning establishments in Taupo.

We have designed three packages, each covering something different. Dates are optional and depending on which class you wish to take it also depends on your current ability as courses are structured to enhance your existing abilities.

The courses on offer…
