Taupo has 365 days of fly fishing and although during the winter months the upper sections of some rivers are closed for spawning there is always somewhere you can throw a line. The method of fishing is by way of nymph with a small strike indicator on the surface or occasionally a wet fly will lure the big one.
The Tongariro River is a world famous trout river and acknowledged by many anglers who have thrown a line into it. , Trout where introduced around 120 years ago and have sustained tremendous numbers ever since with approximately 750,000 trout spawning up it each year. 35 mins drive from Taupo.
The Tauranga-Taupo River is a free-stone river flowing from the Kaimanawa mountain Ranges and although not as productive as the Tongariro it at times produces some amazing action to challenge the best angler. 25min drive from Taupo.
The Waitahanui River is spring fed and seldom dis-colours making sighting trout a little easier. This is ideal for stalking trout and has tracks running the full length of the fishing water through native NZ bush. 15min drive from Taupo.
The upper sections of the Taupo rivers are closed until the 1st of December to assist the trout to move through during winter spawning. But come the 1st December you can begin sighting fishing in clear knee-deep water. There are many large 6-8pound rainbows caught and the browns come into their own during the peak of summer, around February and it is not uncommon to have a double figure fish take a dry at the end of a long hot summer’s day.
